Before you begin creating your citation, you need to determine which citation style to use. Different academic disciplines use different citation styles. The three most popular citation styles are MLA, APA, and Chicago. Usually, your professor will specify which citation style they prefer, but there are some general guidelines for which style is most common in certain fields.
Often used for: Art, Literature, and the Humanities
MLA Formatting and Style Guide - Quick reference guide to the MLA style offering examples of common citations.
MLA Handbook - The Modern Language Association, the authority on research and writing, takes a fresh look at documenting sources in the eighth edition of the MLA Handbook.
Often used for: Psychology and the Social Sciences
APA Style Guide - Quick reference guide to the APA style offering examples of common citations.
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association - The authoritative source for APA citation style and writing guidelines for the Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Often used for: History, Humanities, and the Sciences
Chicago Style Guide - Quick reference guide to the Chicago style offering examples of common citations.
Chicago Manual of Style Online - Chicago Manual of Style Website. Useful video tutorials, forums, and sample citations.
Chicago Manual of Style - The authoritative source for Chicago citation style and writing guidelines used in History and the Humanities.
The College of Staten Island's Citing Sources Guide goes over style guides, why it is important to use citations, Turnitin, SafeAssign, RefWorks, and Writing Guides.
Citation tools, or bibliographic citation managers, allow you to collect and store citations for books and articles found in library catalogs and databases. Some citation tools can be integrated with word processing applications (like Microsoft Word) to automatically generate in-text citations and bibliographies in whatever citation format you specify. Citation tools help you better manage your research sources and save you a lot of time when writing your papers.
RefWorks - Web-based bibliographic citation manager that allows researchers to create their own personal database of research references by importing records from library catalogs and online databases. Researchers can organize, store, and access their references from their online RefWorks account as well as automatically generate formatted citations and bibliographies in any style. This is a CSI Library subscription resource. For college login information, contact the Library Reference Desk (718.982.4010) or Naomi Gold (718.982.4097).
Zotero - A free, easy-to-use Firefox extension to help you collect, manage, and cite your research sources. Zotero offers an easy way to collect, tag, and share citations simply by clicking a button in your web browser.
KnightCite - KnightCite is a free online citation generator. Simply enter information about the item you want to cite (author, title, publisher, etc.) and KnightCite will automatically generate a properly formatted citation in the style you choose (MLA, APA, or Chicago). Registered users can save and order lists of citations for a bibliography and export them into a Microsoft Word document.
Citation Machine - Citation Machine is free online citation generator. Users can enter information about the source they need to cite (author, title, publisher, etc.) and Citation Machine will automatically generate standard bibliographic and in-text citations in the style of their choice (MLA, APA, Turabian, or Chicago).
CSI's wireless network can be accessed from any building on campus. To access the wireless network:
For more information about accessing the campus wireless network, visit the Office of Information Technology Services website.
Access to the CSI Library's databases and electronic resources is restricted to current students, faculty, and staff of the College of Staten Island and retired faculty. In order to access library databases from off-campus, users must sign in with their CUNY Login Information (CUNYFirst and Blackboard username and password). See our CUNYFirst Password FAQ for information on resetting your credentials.
The CSI Library provides access to computers for the purpose of conducting online research and accessing the library’s electronic resources.

Students at the College of Staten Island have access to free black and white printing at a limit of 350 sides per semester (Fall and Spring) and a limit of 175 sides each for Winter and Summer semesters. Students that reach the maximum allowable limit for free printing during any given semester may purchase additional sides at a cost of 10 cents per side. At the end of each semester, all free balances (i.e., unused free printouts) expire and are reset for the next semester.
You can check how many sides you have available for printing here. To check your printing funds available as well as add funds to your account go to: https://www.csi.cuny.edu/campus-life/student-services/dolphin-card/deposits. You can also add funds to your printing account via a cash or credit card transaction by visiting the cash management machines located on the 1st floors of the Library or campus center.
Printers only accept 20 pages per print job. Students who need to print longer documents must break their print jobs into increments of 20 pages or less. If the filesize of a document is too large, you may have to break it into smaller increments (for example, try printing 10 pages at a time, instead of 20.) If you have difficulty printing, please see a librarian at the Reference Desk.

Currently the Library provides access to a wide variety of newspapers in multiple databases. Please consider using all our resources, particularly Nexis Uni, Ethinic Newswatch, and America's News.
The New York Times
You can access The New York Times in several ways. Access is provided via the "New York Times Historical" ProQuest database for articles from 1851 to 4 years ago. For more current access, please sign up for a New York Times Online Academic Pass. Any student, staff, or faculty member can register for free at http://www.nytimes.com/pass using their CUNY email. Once registered, you can log in to your own personal NY Times profile from any computer without going through the library web site. Please note that faculty and staff personal academic subscriptions must be updated annually. The academic pass also includes NYT Magazine and Book Review content. To access NYT articles from 1980- present without an academic pass account, please use the Nexis Uni database. Use the Guided Search and select "A publication" and then enter the full title "The New York Times."
The Wall Street Journal
Access to The Wall Street Journal is also currently provided via free registration with any CUNY email. This online access includes full text content from 1997-present. Once registered through http://wsj.com/cuny, you can log in to your own personal account from any computer without going through the library web site. You can access the paper on desktops or you can download the WSJ apps for your mobile devices. For articles from 1970 to present, please use the Nexis Uni database to search the "Wall Street Journal Abstracts" and we will provide access via Interlibrary Loan. Use the Guided Search and select "A publication" and then enter "Wall Street Journal Abstracts."
Course reserves refer to textbooks and other materials placed on reserve at the library by a professor for a particular class. Students with a valid DolphinCard or CUNY ID may borrow reserve items to use inside the library for a two-hour period. Reserve items are non-circulating, which means they cannot be taken out of the library. To borrow a reserve item, bring the call number of the item to the Circulation Desk. To find the call number of a reserve item, you can look it up in OneSearch. In the picture below, the Call Numbers are circled in red.
If the call number doesn't show up for a book and instead the record says "Multiple Versions Available," click on "See All Versions" to find the call numbers of the different editions we have available:
For more information on Call Numbers and Finding Books at CSI, visit the Finding Books with the Library of Congress Classification System Guide.
Faculty and students may request that materials used in their courses be placed on Course Reserves and restricted to in library use to ensure that all students have access to these resources. Please use the Course Reserves Request Form to place a textbook request. Faculty are encouraged to place materials on Reserve at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester. Items requested to be placed on Reserve may take up to two weeks to be processed from the time of request.
Since the library purchases textbooks from the CSI College bookstore, the bookstore will need to be contacted in addition to the Library. Not having the textbook at the bookstore will delay processing for Course Reserves.
CSI faculty and staff must renew their free NYT academic pass subscriptions each year to prove that they are still associated with the college. You can renew using the link under "New York Times Online (Academic Pass edition)" on our Database list, or use the instructions below:
How do I submit my thesis to the library?
Guidelines for the Submission of a Master's Thesis
A finished Master's thesis is a scholarly work that is the product of extensive research and related preparation. The Library makes Master's theses publicly available to students, faculty, and outside researchers; in print in the Library, or online as of summer of 2022. (For purposes of preservation, and to prepare them for the bindery, theses must adhere to uniform standards of format and construction.)
CSI Library hosts student theses online in CUNY's institutional repository Academic Works. Students must create an Academic Works account using their CSI email address and then upload their documents.
Works here are publicly available online. They can be searched for using the Library catalog OneSearch. They will also show up on internet search engines. If you would prefer to have your thesis held in print only in the Library, and not available online, you may email your document and signature page to reference@csi.cuny.edu, copying your thesis advisor on the email, or drop off two print copies to the reference desk in the Library. Requirements for print formatting are below.
Number of Copies
Students submitting their approved thesis to the Library are asked to submit two copies, both of which must be signed by all members of the thesis committee, or by the program coordinator if no committee exists, on the thesis signature page. One copy will be kept in the Library archives; the other will become part of the circulating collection. Students wishing to copyright their thesis through an official agency must make their own arrangements to do so. (See U.S. Copyright Office website: http://www.copyright.gov/).
Format
The two copies for the Library must be printed on 8 1/2" x 11" unpunched, unbound white paper of 20-24 lb weight or heavier. The paper must also meet the specification of 100% cotton content (i.e. acid free) and must not contain lines, smudges, spots, or shaded background. Copies from a laser printer or commercial copier service are highly recommended. Copies done on departmental or self-service copy machines do not meet the Library's high quality standard. All printing must be one-sided only. Photographs, maps, charts, color copies, and some special illustrative materials may be placed, prepared, or reproduced on paper different from that of the regular text (for example, color copies on cotton paper will smudge; use paper specifically made for color copying). On either side of this special paper, students must include a blank sheet of the specified cotton, acid-free paper. Students also must place one blank sheet at the front and back of the thesis.
The following (minimum) margins must be used throughout the manuscript:
Left margin: 1.5" Top margin: 1.0"
Right margin: 1.0" Bottom margin: 1.0"
Material that cannot fit feasibly within regular or oversized margin requirements may be placed on 11" x 17" paper. Page numbers must be placed in the upper right corner in the same position as the rest of the text. These pages are NOT to be folded prior to submittal. The bindery will fold them as appropriate.
Abstract
Abstracts must be double-spaced and are limited to a single page with margins as described below. This page should bear the heading "Thesis Abstract."
Submission
After a successful thesis defense, each student is expected to submit the work to the Library. They must upload their documents to Academic Works. If they do not want it to be available online they must email the document and signature page to reference@csi.cuny.edu or prepare two official print copies of the manuscript and bring them to the librarian on duty at the Reference desk on the first floor of the Library. If you have any questions, please call the Head of Reference (718.982.4008).

To use library materials online (articles and ebooks), or access your library account use your CUNYFirst login credentials.
Students, faculty, and staff holding a valid Dolphin or CUNY ID can check out circulating library materials at the Circulation Desk on the first floor. A valid Dolphin or CUNY ID card entitles the card holder to entry and borrowing privileges at all CUNY college libraries. CUNY library users may return CUNY library books to any of the CUNY college libraries.
Students, faculty, and staff can obtain a DolphinCard from the Office of Parking & DolphinCard Services, located in West Administration Building 3A Room 106, during regularly scheduled business hours. Alumni can obtain a CSI Alumni Association ID by contacting the Alumni Affairs Office at 718.982.2290 or alumni@ csi.cuny.edu.
Circulating materials refer to any item in the library catalog marked “Regular Loan”. Circulating items may be renewed twice online or in person. Items marked “Non-circulating”, such as reference books, or “Reserve Loan”, such as course reserves, can only be used inside the library and cannot circulate outside the library.
There is a limit of ten (10) books per day, with no total limit throughout the semester. *It is possible to have books with different due dates, you are responsible for when they are due.

Renewing Loans
Can I renew items I have checked out?
You can renew the loan period for something if no hold has been placed on it by another user, if you have not reached the maximum number of renewals, and if your account is in good standing. To avoid overdue fines and blocked renewals, renew items on or before the due date. Reserve items, laptops, DVDs, and other selected items may not be renewed online.
How do I renew?
Library users can manage their account online via the One Search portal. Click on "Sign In" on the top right-hand side of the page and log in with your CUNYFirst credentials.:
Why am I unable to renew?
Renewals will not be granted if:
Note: Patrons can renew an item 2 times. Renewals will not be granted if the item is overdue, renewal limit has been exceeded, there is a block on the borrower’s record, or the item has been requested by another user (has a hold on it). Reserve items cannot be renewed.
eduroam allows all City University of New York students, faculty, and staff to take advantage of free and secure wireless service when visiting an eduroam (education roaming) member university and allows visitors from member universities access when visiting the College of Staten Island.
The eduroam network is available at participating institutions in over 67 territories throughout the world. A full list of participating institutions in the US can be found on the eduroam-US web page. To use eduroam, you will need a WiFi (802.11b/g/n/ac) enabled device such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
Any user (faculty/staff/student) that is part of the eduroam network will be able to login to our wireless network with their home institution's credentials. This means a “visitor” from another higher educational institution (e.g. CUNY, NYU, Rutgers) can login to CSI’s wireless network as long as their home institution participates in eduroam.
No, these individuals would still need to use guest access when logging into our network.
All users will have access to the internet and all CSI Library resources normally accessible on-campus.

Once you have installed eduroam on your device, you can connect at College of Staten Island by:
If you are a CUNY student, faculty or staff, try accessing managelogin.cuny.edu using another device to confirm CUNY Login credentials or reset password. Otherwise, contact the CSI Helpdesk.
If a CUNY guest, contact your home institution or organization for help.
Confirm whether eduroam is listed and accessible on another wireless device.
Contact college help desk or networking team.
CUNY wants its students, faculty and staff to perform a one-time, eduroam connection using the configuration assistant tool (CAT) to ensure their CUNY Login credentials remain secure when connecting to an eduroam Wi-Fi hotspot anywhere in the world. Using the CAT will also make it easier to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connection issues.
For more information on eduroam at CUNY, see: https://www.cuny.edu/about/administration/offices/cis/technology-services/eduroam/
A few students have reported a rare error where their CUNY Login works, but they are not recognized as a CSI community member. If you can access Blackboard and CUNYFirst, but you see the error screen below, please use the CUNY Login Account Self-Service tool to reset your password. Then try to access the resource again.
If this does not work, please email the CSI helpdesk (helpdesk@csi.cuny.edu) and copy Christine.McEvilly@csi.cuny.edu, the CSI Electronic Resources Librarian. Include your Empl ID, the link you tried to access, a screenshot of the error page, and the title of the resource you need. Include the information that you have reset your password, and confirm that you can still access CUNYFirst.
Unfortunately, this issue is related to your CUNYFirst account, and requires a sync and refresh of CSI's local CUNYFirst information with that of the CUNY's Computing & Information Services. However, the CSI IT Helpdesk will get the process underway, and the Library will try to find a way to get you access to the resource you need until the issue is sorted!
