Introduction

The Acquisitions Unit manages a variety of collection development and budgetary activities in conjunction with technical services workflow. This Unit acquires and receives an array of library materials, including individual monographs, audio-visual resources, print reserve materials, technical services supplies, archival materials, digital resources, and non-traditional resources added to the Library’s collection.  Acquisitions works collaboratively with library and department faculty members; various business offices at the university; library vendors, CUNY students, and college staff. The Head of the Unit manages the library’s material expenditures against a variety of allocated material budgets within a given fiscal-year time frame. Overall, the Acquisitions Unit provides leadership and guidance in acquiring library materials by utilizing the library materials budget allocated in a cost effective and efficient manner to build and enhance the collections of the College of Staten Island Library.

Service Policies

Book & Video Donations

The Unit coordinates all activities related to accepting library donations of monographs and AV materials, as well as dispensing library materials after deselection. Activities include internal and external communications about receiving donated items, maintaining records, and liaising with a national donation organization with charitable connections. As donations are an agreed upon exchange of property, the CSI Library reserves the right to make final determinations on final additions to its collections. Please see donation policy Q&A.

Collection Development

The Unit internally supports library subject selectors, faculty liaisons, and academic departments in collection building, while managing the library materials budget. This partnership requires frequent communications with faculty. The Unit also provides an introduction and application of collection development tools, while utilizing new purchasing practices. Through the appropriate selection, evaluation, acquisition, and deselection of various library materials, the Library can support the college’s various academic programs and the multitude of library user needs, both on and off-campus. The Library’s recent Collection Development Policy was created through a combined effort by the Library’s Collection Development Committee and Dean.

Print Reserves

The Unit is in charge of managing the funding and expenditure of course-related materials added to Circulation/Reserves, whether individual monographs or video requests. Due to various limitations in textbook purchase options with formats becoming increasingly complex, it is recommended faculty first attempt place their own extra non-instructional copy on reserve or request a free desk copy from the publisher, whenever possible. Faculty can also move a currently owned library item to Reserves, or request a purchase for permanent addition to the collection. Please see textbook Q&A and E-book Q&A.

Faculty Guidelines

Print Reserves Requests

Print reserves refer to textbooks and other supplementary reading materials placed on reserve by a professor for a particular class. It is the primary responsibility of the professor to make sure materials are on reserve for their class prior to the beginning of each semester.

  • First, check the catalog for any monographs already in the collection that need to be moved from stacks or check to see if they are currently on reserve.
  • Second, due to many limitations, it is highly recommended that faculty temporarily place a non-instructional or desk copy received from the publisher on reserve. Please contact Circulation at Ext. 4011 to place a faculty copy on reserve.

Please use the Print Reserves form for faculty requests for new purchases.

Purchase Requests

The Library welcomes the input of the teaching faculty in its collection development efforts for monographs, both print and e-Books, for purchase. Purchased print monographs can be placed in circulating stacks, non-circulating reference, non-circulating archives, circulating K-12, or Faculty Display in the Library’s rotunda for faculty authored books.

  • Please check our collection development policy for purchases that enhance the collections to support pedagogy and the research needs of the CSI community.
  • Please also check our FAQ on e-Books.

Please use the Purchase Request form for new books. The Library will not purchase already owned items.
