Visit from Dr. Anzor Saralidze, President of Vladimir State University (VLSU)
On Friday, April 12, 2019, Dr. Anzor Saralidze, President of Vladimir State University
(VLSU) and his wife visited CSI. They came for a tour of the CSI Library along with staff from the Center for Global Engagement and Prof. Irina Lyublinskaya (Depart ment of Curriculum and Instruction), who was translating. While showing the display of faculty publications, Associate Dean and Chief Librarian Amy F. Stempler wanted to show President Saralidze something he would particularly appreciate. So she took out Imagining Russian Regions: Subnational Identity and Civil Society in Nineteenth-Century Russia by Prof. Susan Smith-Peter (Department of History). President Saralidze was immediately interested in Smith-Peter's front cover and asked what it was. Dean Stempler found the citation of the image in the book and Dr. Saralidze was elated to discover that the image was of Vladimir on the Kliazma, the home of his university! Adding to the coincidence, he brought her postcards of modern day Vladimir on the Kliazma. He was very excited to show her how the city looks today compared to Smith-Peter's book image from 1819.
