Updates to OneSearch

Below is a repost of a broadcast email sent by Associate Dean & Chief Librarian, Amy Stempler, on August 10, 2020

CUNY libraries launched a major new operating system on Monday, August 3! Most of the big changes are behind the scenes — the new system will transform how the library handles circulation, cataloging, e-resources, and more. But there are some public-facing changes as well. Here are the main changes you should be aware of:

Updates to OneSearch: A new version of OneSearch, the search function on our homepage, will also go live. The changes to the interface are minor, but you may notice some subtle differences.

CUNYfirst Login for OneSearch: You will log into your OneSearch account with your CUNYfirst credentials, not your library barcode number. Forgot your CUNYfirst credentials? Retrieve your username, or reset your password. (Your OneSearch account lets you save items from your results list, gives you more results, and is also your library account- it will show books checked out, due dates and fines. Of course, during the COVID closure books cannot be returned and all fines are waived. If you receive an automated notice about this please disregard it. You may email circ@csi.cuny.edu if you wish.)

As a result of this migration, a barcode is only necessary for in-person book check out, which is not possible while the libraries are closed. Patrons now only need their SLAS/FLAS to access CSI library resources online, and their CUNYfirst login for CUNY-wide resources, and their OneSearch account. (The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) registration form no longer requires a barcode. While we are still providing ILL service, please note that it is constrained by the fact that most of our lending partner academic libraries are closed or only open for limited services during the pandemic. Therefore, we are only able to complete ILL requests for electronic materials at this time.)

Changes to Permalinks: Permalinks to individual items in OneSearch will also change and, unfortunately, old permalinks will break. We’d hoped this problem could be avoided, but it regrettably can’t be, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience it will cause some users. To find an item’s new permalink, you’ll need to perform a fresh search for the item in OneSearch.

Every OneSearch record includes a permalink.

Expect Some Hiccups: It will take a little time to make all necessary changes across the library website. Please bear with us as we update links and deal with any issues that arise, and let us know if you encounter any persistent problems.

Evergreen Reminder: OneSearch does not include all items from all library databases, or all search features found in other databases. Therefore, when you need to dive deep into disciplinary literature or carefully craft an advanced search, you may favor our individual databases. (Also, consult WorldCat to find books not held by CUNY libraries. There are no physical loans during the COVID closure, but you may be able to get items through interlibrary loan electronically, particularly journal articles.)
