"Social and Cultural Crisis in Chinese Tuva Society", an exhibit curated by Prof. Yuxin Hou (Department of Sociology and Anthropology)
This exhibit is currently on display in the Library rotunda, and consists of photos, a documentary, and papers documenting the cultural life of the Tuva Society in China. Professor Hou will also be giving a presentation on his fieldwork in the Library conference room (1L-110) on Thursday January 30, 2020 from 2:30pm-3:30pm. CC CLUE Credit.
The Tuva people are scattered throughout Xinjiang of China, Outer Mongolia and Tuva People's Republic (part of Russia). However, Chinese Tuva people are rarely known to the outside world. Dr. Yuxin Hou conducted in-depth anthropological fieldwork in Tuva villages in Xinjiang of China. This exhibition depicts the social and cultural crisis in Chinese Tuva society under the impact of tourism, modernization, forced settlement, among other issues.
Tuva people are ancient hunters and nomadic peoples whose lineage can be traced back more than a thousand years to the Tang dynasty. Chinese Tuva people’s traditional culture and values, social cohesion, livelihood, and natural environment is in a current state of rapid transformation, as examined in the exhibit.
