The Radicalization of Jewish Identity and Its Impact on Jewish Students Slideshow
In this discussion, Lisa Armony, Executive Director of Hillel International’s Campus Climate Initiative will explore the ways in which Jews are “othered” in right- and left-wing extremist ideology through racialized rhetoric, its impact on the Jewish student experience on college campuses, and best practices for supporting Jewish students and inclusive discourse.
Hate and Love on Staten Island and in NYC: From Immigration Controversies to Antisemitism and Islamophobia Today Slideshow
Fleeing persecution in Europe, Jews came to New York in waves over the past 350 years. Alongside other immigrants, their arrival brought challenges and distrust as well as new opportunities. Antisemitism waxed and waned, alternating moments of interfaith strength with heightened persecution. The Covid-19 pandemic and more recently the Israel-Hamas war brought increases in bias incidents and hate crimes, from social media to college campuses. This lecture will seek to understand how the past informs the present and future, and how looking at diverse forms of antisemitism from left and right, as well as its connection to racism and islamophobia, might help us invent new responses to fighting hate crimes. It argues for the role of Holocaust and anti-bias education and action to create intercultural understanding.

Antisemitism does not only threaten the Jewish community – it jeopardizes the safety of countless other communities and our fundamental democratic norms and values. Amy Spitalnick, CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, will discuss the different ways antisemitism manifests and how it is inextricably linked with the broader fight for our democracy.

Jewish students, faculty, and staff, and the campus community are invited to come together to share and discuss their experiences with antisemitism in their lives, communities, and on campus. Our hope is to create a safe space to explore this difficult topic. This program is organized by the Office of Student Life - Pluralism & Diversity, Hillel, and the Department of the Library.
