“Wheels and Cogs”: Why Viennese Policemen Deported Jews and Roma During the Holocaust

Between 1941 and 1943 policemen in Vienna, Austria were ordered by Nazi authorities to guard deportation trains that carried the Roma (“Gypsies”) and the Jews from Austria to concentration and death camps. Most policemen were not Nazis. Why did they comply?

 

 

Mark Lewis is Associate Professor of European History at the City University of New York (College of Staten Island and the Graduate Center). He is the author of “Continuity and Change in the Vienna Police Force, 1914–1945” in the journal Shoah: Intervention. Methods. Documentation (2019-20), The Birth of the New Justice: The Internationalization of Crime and Punishment, 1919-1950 (OUP, 2016), and Himmler's Jewish Tailor (with Jacob Frank, Syracuse University Press, 2000).
