Banned and Challenged Books Week

The CSI Library, in partnership with New York Public Library (NYPL), will be holding two events during Banned and Challenged Books Week

The American Library Association (ALA) condemns censorship and works to ensure free access to information. Every year, the Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) compiles a list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books in order to inform the public about censorship in libraries and schools. The lists are based on information from media stories and voluntary reports sent to OIF from communities across the U.S. Read about the top 10 challenged books.

Our virtual events will be held on Tuesday September 20, 2022 and Thursday October 6, 2022.

Both will be held during CLUB hours, via Zoom meeting. Pre-registration is required.

Banned and Challenged Books Week: A Discussion of the Response of American Librarianship in the 1940s and 1950s to Censorship and the Banning of Books in the 1940s and 1950s, featuring clips from the film, Storm Center.

When: Tuesday, September 20, 2022 (online CLUE, 2:30pm-3:30pm)

The CSI Library invites you to a virtual presentation and facilitated discussion about American librarianship's response to censorship and book banning in the 1940s and 1950s. Professor Jonathan Cope, Instruction & Reference Librarian, will discuss some of the historical roots of banned books and present film clips from the 1956 film, Storm Center,  starring Bette Davis. Storm Center is about a librarian who becomes the center of a McCarthyism-fueled firestorm when she refuses to remove the book, "The Communist Dream," from the library once her town council labeled it incendiary anti-American propaganda. This virtual presentation is a CC CLUE event.

Banned and Challenged Books Faciliated Discussion

The CSI Library is pleased to invite you to a virtual facilitated discussion on the implications of book bans and the dangers of censorship in both academic and public libraries. We will also have selected readings of banned books, and welcome members of the campus community to contact us if they wish to participate. In addition to co-sponsorship from the departments of Educational Studies and Curriculum & Instruction, Professor Emily Drabinski (Graduate Center, CUNY), incoming president of the American Library Association, will join the discussion.

When: Thursday, October 6, 2022 from 2:30pm-3:30pm via Zoom

This is an online CC Clue event.
