“Whose Barrio?” investigates gentrification in East Harlem (El Barrio), and was produced by Newsday journalists Ed Morales and Laura Rivera. This 2009 documentary discusses the conflict between real estate developers and residents of East Harlem who feel they are being priced out of the neighborhood that is their spiritual and cultural home. Author and journalist Ed Morales shows how residents, elected officials and activists clash with real estate developers over gentrification of the East Harlem neighborhood of upper Manhattan.
Morales discusses his personal connection with the neighborhood and introduces two residents, Jose Rivera and James Garcia, who have opposing views of the changes coming to the neighborhood. In addition, the documentary also shows how activists are fighting gentrification through partnerships with organizations such as the Movement for Justice in El Barrio and Hope Community.
